I Try To Be The Mummy Who… – A Poem

I try to be the mummy who treats you with respect,

Who listens your point of view and doesn’t interject.

I try to be the mummy who wears a happy smile,

Who calmly deals with each mishap and nothing seems to rile.

I try to be the mummy who always keeps composure,

Who deftly floats above the chaos, and keeps it all together.

I try to be the mummy who easily forgives,

Who doesn’t hold a grudge or shout unladylike expletives.

I try to be the mummy who’s constantly consistent;

Firmly setting boundaries but infinitely patient.

I try to be the mummy who gives her full attention,

Who praises all your efforts and showers you with affection.

I try to be the mummy who plays on the slide

I try to be the mummy who doesn’t raise her voice,

Who keeps her cool, and simply, calmly highlights the bad choice.

I try to be the mummy who keeps track of everything;

Assembly, P.E., the day your homework is due in.

I try to be the mummy who shows body confidence,

To inspire you to love your skin with conscious, proud acceptance.

I try to be the mummy who is positive, upbeat,

Who sees the good in everyone and won’t admit defeat.

I try to be the mummy who speaks proudly of herself

To show that you can be proud too and need to love yourself.

I try to be the mummy that you can trust completely,

Who always tells the truth and loves you wholly, unconditionally.

I try to be the mummy that you deserve - children field of daisies

I try to be the mummy, oh the mummy you deserve

Who gets it spot on every time and never frays a nerve.

I try so hard, my little one. I’m trying every day

To parent you the best I can and lead you the right way.

But sometimes (often) it doesn’t work. You’ve noticed this, I’m sure.

I shout and scream and mess it up. I feel like such a failure.

And when I’ve yelled my piece at you and sent you to your room,

I crumble to the floor and the guilt starts to consume.

I know that you need discipline and I know that that’s my job

“But I wish I could be better; more controlled when cross,” I sob.

I know that you are watching and the way I act, you’ll copy.

If I fly off the handles, I must expect you to be stroppy.

Each day I wake with new resolve to be the perfect parent,

To be the mum I want to be and relish every moment.

I know that it’s not possible and often I will stray

But I try to be the mum who keeps on trying anyway.

Ahhh, that was cute. For some reason I started to read it in the style of Stormzy…..probably due to the teens listening to him non stop! I love poems and you nailed this one. It is lovely and one that your children will be able to look back at later when they are parents. #Blogcrush

These words really resonate with me. I often feel I’ve set out with the best intentions and everything seems to go wrong! We all try our best and that’s all we can do. Glad it’s not just me. Xx

This is so sweet! I love that the underlying theme is treating your children like their own people. Yes, children need discipline and authority, but they also need love, respect, and the support to learn on their own.
    Thanks for sharing!

Great poem Lucy. You are doing your absolute best and the fact that you even consider what kind of impression you leave on your kids speaks volumes. We’re only human! #BlogCrush

Lucy, you are an amazing Mummy. It is so clear for everyone to see how much you love those girls of your just through the way you write about being their mother. We are all trying our best and that is all we can do. Lovely poem xx #blogcrush

This is just wonderful. I feel all of these emotions too even though mine are older. The mummy guilt is horrific and the copying our ways – I’ve been reflecting on that as Georgia now hits 18 and is no longer a child – have I taught her everything she needs to know? Have I been the role model I’d want her to have – yes there is a blog post coming on it!! The sheer fact that you have written this poem and connected to your feelings you really are being the best mummy you can be and the only one your children will ever want xx #DreamTeam

Oh I absolutely love this! It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside – I can totally relate, I’m hoping so much that I’m a calm parent when baby is older, but I know I’m prone to getting angry quickly. You sound like an amazing mummy to me #dreamteam

Oh this is so beautifully written Lucy. Apart from being a fab rhyme, I think you have hit the nail on the head when it comes to all those parent emotions about really wanting to get things right. I’m sure your little girls think you are perfect just the way you are. #DreamTeam xx

This is so true! We spend so much time concentrating to be the perfect parent when sometimes we need to stop trying so much and give ourselves a break. being perfect 24/7 is impossible and as they get older, the kids will realise it and won’t hate you for it. Parenting is really tough emotionally and physically, but you’re doing an amazing job lovely!

This is a beautiful beautiful poem, it’s like you’ve taken my thoughts and put them into an amazing poem. I feel like this all the time and seem to put way too much pressure in myself, the weekends are my only time with Bear so I feel like I have to spend every second with him but I realise I need to also have a break too! Thanks so much for sharing with #StayClassyMama!

Ahh I LOVE this! I think that we all have times when we feel that we aren’t being the Mummy we want to be, but we are being the best Mummy that we CAN be, and that’s the most important thing! Thank you for joining us at #Sharingthebloglove
