The Secret Beach In The Heart Of West Yorkshire

Did you know there is a secret beach in West Yorkshire?

Our girls love visiting the beach – the sand, the sea, the ice creams! There’s something so lovely about wiggling your toes through soft sand! And of course no holiday is complete without building a gigantic sand castle or splashing in the sea.

Okay, I may have told a little lie about there being a beach in West Yorkshire (sorry). But there are lots of places that are beach-like so if the urge to get to coast is strong, these fabulous destinations will certainly do the job!

6 Sandy Beach Experiences In West Yorkshire

Hemsworth Water Park | WF9 5JB

Hemsworth has a lovely sandy beach that stretches down to the water’s edge – perfect for some family beach time! There is also a large sandpit that houses a children’s play area and, of course, the there are plenty of water sports activities to watch or have a go at yourself.

Pugneys Water Park | WF2 7BN

Pugneys is a gorgeous little lake with a gentle path curling around it. Although bathing isn’t recommended, there are watersports available (from pedalos to windsurfing). Our girls love watching the boats whizzing up and down the water.

In 2016, a new pirate-themed playground was introduced, with climbing frames, sunken ship wrecks and swings to play on. The surface is covered in sand which is lovely for playing in in the summer and really adds an authentic feel to the pirate theme.

Wakefield / Castleford Seaside Events

Both Wakefield and Castleford are holding Seaside in the City events this summer (2018). As well as lots of sand there will be beach-themed stalls (pick-n-mix, fish and chips, etc) and lots of fun for the whole family.

CASTLEFORD: 19 August 2018

Bolton Abbey | BD23 6EX

Bolton Abbey is one of our favourite family destinations, whatever the weather! From the summer Welly Walk to the Christmas-themed kids’ trails, there is always something going on here, and of course the scenery is stunning!

There is beautiful stream that winds its way through the estate and the stepping stones near the Abbey are always a popular attraction. There is also a little beach area here where the water is shallow and perfect for paddling and splashing around in.

Gaddings Dam | OL14 6JJ

Now we’ve not visited this one yet but apparently Gaddings Dam in Todmordon has shallow waters and a sandy embankment – perfect for enjoying some beach time in the heart of the Pennines! The dam was due to be drained in 2001 but a group of locals were determined to keep it open and set up a company to restore and maintain it.

Be aware that there is no road access so you have to walk up the 2.5km footpath to get there.

Eureka | HX1 2NE

We’ve reviewed Eureka before here at Lucy At Home because we reckon it’s one of the best family attractions in the north! Eureka is a museum aimed specifically at children, and everything is interactive. It’s our go-to rainy day option.

But don’t discount it when the sun is out – there is a giant sandpit outside that will keep children entertained for hours – a real beach experience!
